Background

NAAMTA--the National Accreditation Alliance of Medical Transport Applications--accredits medical transport companies. When I came on board, the organization was in the middle of a plagiarism lawsuit against a competitor who had copied their accreditation requirements handbook. The immediate priority was to build an airtight evidentiary case, and that meant documenting the original regulatory basis for every requirement in the book.

I cataloged more than 5,000 individual state and federal regulations across all 50 states covering ground, air, and aquatic medical transport services, then mapped each one against NAAMTA's 300+ page handbook. The handbook had already cited general sources, but my documentation pinpointed each regulation's specific location and verbatim language. The result was a comparison matrix comprehensive enough that the judge ruled in NAAMTA's favor. (The company owner agreed to some minor changes the competitor had requested, which was a diplomatic concession rather than a legal one.)

Once the lawsuit wrapped up, my focus shifted to the other thing the organization needed: a real brand. NAAMTA's existing marketing materials were functional at best. I redesigned everything from scratch--new website, new style guide, new collateral--and built a content library that could be reused across different media. The rebranding resulted in a 50% increase in accreditation applications, which was attributed to greater trust in the program's professionalism.

I also took on the organization's ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System certification, tracking and updating all internal and external processes for continuous compliance. NAAMTA achieved the certification during my tenure.

The scope at this job was unusually wide for a technical writer: regulatory research, legal documentation, graphic design, web development, branding, QMS compliance, intranet development, and member-facing help documentation. I didn't say no to much. After I left for Ivanti, NAAMTA brought me back as a freelance graphic designer to redesign the IAAA booklet for the 2014 ITIC tradeshow in Venice.

What I Did

  • Researched all state and federal regulations for ground, air, and aquatic medical transport services across all 50 states as part of a plagiarism lawsuit defense.
  • Documented and sourced more than 5,000 individual regulatory references against NAAMTA's 300+ page accreditation handbook using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, providing evidence that contributed to a court victory.

Branding & Marketing

  • Developed a new company website using WordPress and designed all marketing materials from scratch using Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop, including a cross-media style guide and a reusable content library for collateral production. Samples: Kit Brochure, Portal Slick, Employee Highlight, IAAA Booklet.
  • Created the new company brand identity and implemented it across all media channels. Rebranding resulted in a 50% increase in accreditation applications.
  • Wrote, reviewed, and edited all company content, including marketing materials, press releases, and accreditation forms.

Technical Documentation & QMS

  • Tracked and updated all internal and external processes for continuous compliance with ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System requirements, contributing to the organization's successful certification.
  • Wrote help files for accredited members covering the learning center, intranet, and form storage systems (quick reference guide).
  • Developed intranet documentation including customer portal walkthroughs, training videos, member resources, and accreditation renewal forms (task form sample).
  • Authored a risk assessment for the company's internal servers housing all accreditation and member materials.
