Background
I'd already worked with Borderland Media once--they bought ARPGamer from me, and I assumed that was the end of it. But the people over there had seen what I could do. The writing, the editorial wrangling, the fact that I could keep a content calendar from imploding. So when they stood up Slash Shout, a daily esports news site, they asked me to come run it.
Editor-in-Chief of someone else's operation is a different animal than running your own. I had 5 writers. That meant story assignments, editing everything that came in, keeping the publishing calendar on track, and drafting a weekly newsletter that recapped the best of what we'd published. Five different voices, one house style. You don't flatten people into a template--you nudge. Consistently. While also making sure nobody misses a deadline.
Four months in, the decision-makers at Borderland Media decided the future was video. They axed the written content side entirely. I get it; the industry was moving that way. But the work we shipped was real. Daily publishing cadence, a functioning editorial workflow, a team that hit its marks. Just not the direction the company wanted to go anymore.
